There is a total of 86 preserved Southern Steam Locomotives,
plus one pseudo Southern 'USA' tank, compiled by Syd Carroll.
Please note. The date to the left of the class denotes when
the first of the class was built, hence its position in the list.

Never carried a number in its career. Located at Poor Priest
Hospital, Canterbury, which is now called the Canterbury Heritage Centre. The
first steam locomotive to haul fare paying passengers on a public railway in
Great Britain. World's first locomotive to be preserved.

Please note: The above facts have been
researched from many different sources which may or may not be reliable. If you

particularly applies to the location of locomotives which can and do move
frequently between heritage railways. Thank you.
In addition to the BR numbers listed, please note that some of the locomotives
also had an 's' prefix added for a short time after nationalization in
1948, such as s21C107 above. Not all those so altered were recorded in the
various lists available to me and in some cases the 's' was only on the
engine for a very short time. If you know of any preserved SR locomotives
(other than those WC/BoBs shown above) that DID have this adornment, please let
