It is generally recommended to work to a dated photograph in order to get the correct cab / smoke deflector relationship as some were fitted with short / long smoke deflectors when built before the standard length was fitted on new builds and retro fitted to all others. 21C108 was the first to be fitted with the standard length deflector on trial in January 1947, followed by 21C122 and 21C140 in February 1947. The first new locomotive to be fitted with the standard length deflector was 21C158 in April 1947. Safety valve location was also moved from being located on the front boiler ring to behind the dome from 1952 onwards, so your need to choose your base model carefully.  For a table on the Hornby variants click here.

I would recommend the following books:

  • Locomotives of the Southern Railway Part 2, Bradley D.L., RCTS, Oct-75, 0-901115-31-2
  • Bulleid Pacifics, Winkworth, D.W., George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1981, 0-04-625005-0
  • The Book of the West Country and Battle of Britain Pacifics, Derry, R, Irwell Press, 2002, 1-903266-23-8
