Sturminster Newton

Sturminster Newton, not strictly a "Southern" Signalbox but on the "Southern" operated part of the Somerset and Dorset. The Signalbox was an all-timber example of the SDJR Type 1 design, although the main windows had curved tops to their frames similar to the later LSWR Type 4 'boxes. It was opened in 1876, being inspected by the Board of Trade in December that year, and initially housed a 12-lever Stevens frame which was extended to 16 levers by 1930; it was closed on 6th March 1966 along with the railway it served.
