Semley

Semley Old The interior of the original Signalbox at Semley, a L&SWR Type 1 'box, probably dating from the late 1870s, that was situated on the Up platform near the London end and contained a Stevens-pattern frame, believed to have been originally of 16 levers but was later extended to 18 levers. Block working to Semley (up) and Gillingham (down) was by Preece 1-wire 2-position instruments. This 'box was closed on 29 January 1961 and replaced on the same day by a new 'box.

The interior of the new 'box, a BR(S) Type 16, which was located just on the London side of the old 'box. It housed a 28-lever WB&S 'A3'-type frame which was installed at the rear of the 'box. Block working was standard BR(S) 3-wire 3-position instruments. (Note the two levers at the RH end of the frame painted with black and white chevrons - these controlled mechanical detonator placers.) This box was the last of several replacement Type 16s to be built on the Salisbury - Exeter line and was also the first to close after a very short life on 21 December 1965, although the structure remains in private residential use.
