| Purley Signalbox controlled the main Brighton line and
the junction with the two ex-SER branches to Caterham and Tattenham Corner. Typical of the modern
image Signalbox built by the Southern Railway, it was equipped with a
Westinghouse 'L' miniature lever frame. There are also sidings here
which in recent years have been used for a lot of aggregate traffic. The
control for the hopper is a building that looks remarkably like a Signalbox! As
with all the other Signalboxes on the Brighton line between Penge and Preston
Park, Purley closed with the opening of the Three Bridges Signalling Centre in
1983. The frame from here lives on, though, at Bekonskot Model Railway,
Beaconsfield.
