The original Oxted Signalbox, photographed on an unkown but sunny
day, was a little unusual in that most 'boxes of this type were
brick-built. Built by the Croydon & Oxted Joint Railway (itself jointly
owned by the LB&SCR and the SER) to the LB&SCR's 2c design, it
opened in 1896 and closed 101 years later when it was replaced by a smaller,
brick-built 'box.

| A far more wintry scene in this 24 January 1979 view of the
old 'box! Inside the 'box had a 29 lever frame of LB&SCR design.

Looking very dilapidated this was how the 'box looked in
November 1985.

| Looking even more dilapidated this was how the 'box looked
in December 1986, just seven months before it was replaced with a new brick
built one. Note the wooden 'add-on' has been demolished here.

The modern brick-built Signalbox but with an old "Southern
Railway" sign alongside! This has a panel inside and took over from the
original 'box on 11 July 1987 and was the first example of SSI (Solid State
Interlocking) installed on BR(S). Windows to watch the trains go by are no
longer required!
