Fremington

Fremington, signalbox on the Barnstaple to Bideford line, was kept quite busy by the sidings where coal and other dry goods were unloaded from, and china clay loaded and into, small coastal ships.
The eagle-eyed will spot that the signal arm has a black instead of white stripe on the facing side. This is because it was a square-ended yellow arm with black stripe - a full height shunt signal in fact like the one depicted at Chichester. There was another similar signal at the other end of the yard. The 'box closed on 3rd November 1968, some twenty months after the loop line through the station had been lifted following the withdrawal of passenger trains on 2nd October 1965.
