| Some 42 years after the line was singled a new loop was opened during December 2009 with Axminster station in the middle of it. This allowed the service frequency to be upgraded from a maximum of two-hourly to an hourly one. The former Down platform to the east of the road over-bridge has been closed-off to passengers for some years now, yet has been given a set of nice new (?) lamp-posts! The new loop (initially controlled from a replacement panel in Chard Jcn box ) is signalled for bi-directional running on both lines and in normal service 'right-hand running' applies, i.e. Down trains use the new platform and Up trains the old Down platform. |

The station building, once covered in horrible grey paint, has now been fully restored to its brick
finish. The front of the building having had this treatment several years before.

| The Dorset coast is part of the "Jurassic Coast" World Heritage Site, something
travellers are reminded of on the station name boards. Pity there is no longer a train to change to that would
deliver one to the coast.
