Taken from the window of Mitcham junction signal box in 1970, this shot of a Bulleid 4-Sub shows what appears to be a very rare working indeed as it is emanating from the West Croydon direction. The reality was that the line from Mitcham Junction to Sutton was the subject of extensive engineering works spread over several Sundays and the unit is simply returning from its short shunt up the branch so that it could reverse and return to Victoria. photograph by Mike Morant
