OUR MEMBERSHIP ETIQUETTE:
The Southern E Group is for the majority of the time a
self-running and self-moderating group. This is because although we only have a
few rules we ask members to observe them to ensure that things do run
sweetly......
- Please limit discussion to the Southern Railway of the
United Kingdom (including those railway companies that were merged together to
form it and those that succeeded it) relating to both prototype and modelling
matters. Discussion of railway modelling techniques in general - particularly
with the aim of improvement of... - is also welcomed.
- Please ensure the subject line of your e mail accurately
reflects the content especially when a replying to a discussion has been
running some time and drifted from the original topic. Replies under those
conditions should be more appropriately re-titled.
- When replying to a message please refrain from blindly
quoting the previous message(s) in full. Please ensure you only include the
minimum required to clarify what your response is to.
- If a subject is deemed to be not of a relevant topic for
the group, and inevitably if it involves a railway that has something to do
with copper capped chimneys and Swindon, a fellow member make invoke a visit to
you by THE CARDINAL -
which is a light hearted way of moderating off-topic discussions.
- Before responding to a message reread the original
message one more time. Confusion can ensue if a wrong assumption is made and
everyone responds.
- We hope members will refrain from sending derogatory
remarks about other members or opinions that may be inflammatory. Doing so can
cause sudden irrational comment from all directions. If you do get into a
personal argument mail your response to just that member and not to the group
as a whole. This is not a regularly moderated discussion group, however the
SEmG's voluntary officers (see below) reserve the right to intervene if on
an extremely rare occasion a topic or discussion becomes too heated.
- Members are requested not to hide behind the annonymity
of a pseudonym. If your real name is not shown as part of the details in your
e-mail program then you are requested to write it in the body of your posting.
Should a member persistently refuse to do so then he or she may be asked to
leave the list.
- Members must not receive unsolicited attachments.
In fact our Yahoo Groups server has been configured to strip out an attachment.
When wanting to use an attachment such as a picture or diagram to illustrate
the conversation members are requested to do so either:
- by an e-mail to the group soliciting positive responses
from individuals to receive an attachment, or
- by posting to the shared files area on our Yahoo Groups
server (see below)
- For both methods of delivery if sending something which
is not your own original work you are strongly advised to ensure that you are
not breaking copyright. The SEmG will not be responsible for, nor does it
condone, breaches of copyright by its members.
- Occasional advertising is allowed, provided what you are
advertising is related to the Southern Railway (or its predecessors and
succesors). Please make sure that such adverts end with the reminder that
members should contact you offline to discuss details and make sure that when
replying to any adverts, that you follow this procedure.
- If uploading files to the shared area groups.yahoo.com/group/SEmG/files
please bear in mind it is for temporary purposes only. You should not link to
any file in this space from any website since it is liable to become
unavailable without notice. When the space becomes 75% full the List Manager
will delete files (excepting those used for group administration) starting from
those there longest until the space is only 50% full. This is to prevent the
space becoming overloaded and stopping others from uploading to it
- Members may also upload photographs to the shared Photo
Album page at Yahoo!. You should use one of the seven existing albums and not
create a new one without consulting the List Manager. As with the Files area,
once the Photo Album area becomes more than 75% full the List Manager will
delete photos starting from those there longest until the space is only 50%
full. Further information on uploading is available here
- Because of similarity of our name with the Southern
Electric Group please refer to us as the Southern E-Group, or SEmG for short.
Our group's mail server automatically prefixes each email you send to the
group with "[SEmG]" to identify readily e mail from the group.
- SEmG members need to have a universally accepted email
address and preferably 7 day a week access. If you or your service provider has
problems which interrupts your service for more than a couple of days it may
cause the egroups.com server to temporarily remove your name from the Southern
E-Group list.
- Once you have joined you are also strongly recommended
to log into Yahoo Groups site (http://groups.yahoo.com/) and set up your personal profile. You
can change the password to something that suits you, select the options of
receiving individual e mails/a daily digest/or no e mails (but read on-line
from the archive), view the membership list, view files in the shared area,
read the group's event calendar, etc. When you are going to be away
from your e mail for an extended period (for instance whilst being away on
holiday) you are advised to set your personal profile to the "no e mails
(internet only)" option rather than unsubscribing since this will prevent
a possible delay with re-subscribing when you return.
- Membership of the SEmG is free of charge though
periodically voluntary donations into a trust fund may solicited to ensure the
group has funds to cover its very low but necessary operating costs. Donations
into this trust fund should be made on the understanding that they do not buy
any privileges.
- The SEmG is a group of volunteers working in their -
often scarce - part time and not a business. All members aim to respond
promptly but tolerance is asked when personal and business concerns result in
delay.
